Simon

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your past experience?

My name is Simon Shave. I live in one of the Supported Living Bungalows run by Diverse Abilities Plus with my friend Graham.  I was also at Langside School when I was younger and I go to Barnabas Adult Day Centre too so Diverse Abilities Plus really has been with me nearly all my life!

What are your hobbies/interests? Is there anything unusual you like to do in your spare time?!

I like meetings – especially ones that I am chairing ! My friends joke that I always have my clip-board with me!  I like watching films and go to a film club every week.  I am also a bit of a socialite and like going out and painting the town red at Clubs and Bars.

What sort of volunteering do you do/ have you done for Diverse Abilities Plus?  What tasks does that involve/skills does that use?

I often help the fundraising team on the Diverse Ability Plus stands at shows and fetes during the year, signing up volunteers and generally being an ambassador for the charity. I have also spoken at presentations to local groups and societies to tell them more about the Charity.  I’m pretty good with computers so I’d like to use that skill more too.

Do you do regular volunteering or on an ad hoc basis?

Ad hoc  as needed – I generally say yes to most requests!

What made you decide to Volunteer for DAP?

I like people and representing Diverse Abilities Plus at shows and fairs gives me a chance to chat with the general public which is fun. Besides, it gives me something to do!

Had you had any previous experience in Volunteering? If so, where?

I am a trustee for the Poole Forum Film Club which meets once a month and I am in charge of the newsletter.

What have you gained/learnt from your Volunteering experience? Is it what you expected?

Confidence in speaking with the public. It has widened my social network. If truth be told, I’d quite like my own office….;-)

What do you enjoy about volunteering for DAP?

Getting to know people and being able to be creative with new fundraising ideas. Also for me it’s about having leadership, control and independence.  I do so wish I could drive!

Would you recommend other people get involved? Why?

I definitely would. There’s no way you wouldn’t get something out of it and you get to learn new skills.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
